Spanish Manos Limpias Affaire: Prime Minister to Address Parliament Amidst Allegations Involving His Wife!

Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez was forced to address parliament regarding the corruption investigation involving his wife, Begona Gomez. The investigation, initiated by the anti-corruption agency Manos Limpias (clean hands), centers on alleged corrupt business dealings and abuse of power by Gomez. The probe began after Manos Limpias submitted materials to the court based on reports from an online newspaper. However, the agency has stated it cannot verify the accuracy of these reports.

Manos Limpias has participated in a number of high-profile court cases in recent years and is led by Miguel Bernad, a man linked to the far right. However, Bernad acknowledged that the allegations might be false because they were based on online newspaper stories. Manos Limpias describes itself as a trade union and has, in the past, targeted politicians, bankers, and King Felipe VI’s sister, Princess Cristina.

In 2016, Bernard was arrested on allegations of extortion for which he received four years in prison, although the conviction was absolved by Spain’s Supreme Tribunal this year due to a ‘lack of evidence’.

In response to the allegations, Sanchez has temporarily stepped down from his duties, accusing right-wing factions of attempting to undermine his political authority. The prosecuting authority in Madrid has indicated that due to a lack of substantial evidence, the case is likely to be dismissed soon, and they intend to appeal for its dismissal.

The scandal has also strained diplomatic relations between Spain and Argentina. Tensions were heightened following offensive public remarks exchanged between leaders of both nations. Spain recalled its ambassador for consultation after Argentina’s President Javier Milei made a disparaging comment about Begona Gomez. Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares has described the situation as “the most serious state in recent history” between the two countries. Relations are expected to further deteriorate, as Milei is unlikely to issue a public apology.

As Prime Minister Sanchez addresses parliament, he is expected to provide clarity on the allegations against his wife and outline the steps being taken to address the investigation. This development comes at a critical time for Sanchez’s administration as it navigates both domestic and international challenges amidst the ongoing scandal.
