CCN was certainly one of the best media outlets in the area of crypto and blockchain. We have always appreciated the reputable and well-founded reporting. The quality of their reports was clearly above that of the large CCN competitors CoinDesk or CoinTelegraph. CCN closes its doors after an update from Google that caused CCN’s advertising revenue to collapse by 90% due to lower visibility of articles on Google.
According to today’s CCN announcement, the SEO analyzer Sistrix shows that CCN’s visibility on Google dropped from 1.2 to less than 0.6. This change by Google is having a significant impact on the CCN advertising income on which the crypto media outlet relied. The money CCN made on advertisements was directly funneled back into the financing of the operation.
The problem with advertising-financed media projects has been known for more than a decade. The dependency of those ventures on Google is high. Google AdSense is by far the most important source of advertising revenue for most of these projects.
The good news here is that the visibility on Google of FinTelegram’s international site (www.fincrimeobserver.com) has grown massively since the Google update. The visibility index of Sistrix shows an increase of 87%. Furthermore, FinTelegram is not advertising-financed and therefore less dependent on Google. FinTelegram is less focused on the broad masses but on the important niche of investor protection.
We sincerely regret the departure of CCN. Thus the crypto scene loses an essential quality medium. CCN was founded in 2013 as CryptoCoinsNews and has been around since then. According to CCN, it has been (still is) the crypto-related news site with the highest amount of traffic worldwide. An impressive success!
