The Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) has been hitting the headlines for the wrong reasons during the past years. Following resignations, including that of Heathcliff Farrugia and Anton Axiaq, both being prosecuted for alleged serious crimes, the Chief Internal Auditor of MGA, James Grech resigned for unknown reasons. The regulator did not make any announcement of the departure. James Grech was enrolled within MGA during the days when disgraced Joseph Cuschieri was at the helm of the Authority.
Joseph Cuschieri, a Maltese accountant has been heading the MGA from 2013 to 2018 when he became CEO of the Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA). In Nov 2020, Cuschieri resigned in disgrace after the shocking revelations that he accompanied the alleged mastermind of a Maltese journalist’s murder, on a trip to Las Vegas. Another high official within the MFSA, Edwina Licari (report here) also accompanied Yorgen Fenech, who is currently in prison on charges of being the mastermind behind the murder of the Maltese blogger Daphne Caruana Galizia.
James Grech is a part-owner of Lead Training Services, where he was publicly carrying out business while holding a high position as MGA’s Chief Internal Audit Officer. This was exposed by Maltese media and Fintelegram. At the same time, James Grech was publicly into the real estate business in Malta. Radar Developments Limited (C82126), a Maltese registered company that James Grech owns with his brother George Grech develops real estate in Malta.
